Massage Techniques Video

The Massage Techniques video of today shows very neat techniques that are easy to learn and to apply.

Most of the techniques shown seem familiar to me, similar to Swedish Massage therapy.

Especially the techniques where the massage therapist anchors the tissue with one hand and stretches it away with the other hand. This is a very effective release technique not just of muscle tension, but also of restrictions in the fascial structures.

The other technique that I think is very unique in this video is the shoulder relaxation in the prone position (face down). By putting your leg under the persons arm, you create some stretch on the front of the shoulder.

You need to do this slowly though, because a lot of people are very restricted in the shoulder.

I'm not so fond of the pendulum movement of the arm, the way it is shown here. You are basically moving the arm through internal and external rotation. The problem is that on the internal rotation the shoulder gets rotated to far in the video and creates a jolt into the joint. Try to avoid this by not moving the shoulder that far.

The Truth about Massage Techniques Video

The Truth about Massage Techniques Video talks about the fact that even many of professionals focus too much on massage techniques. I'm not saying that massage techniques are bad, but the fact that you know how to do a certain massage technique does not make you a great massage therapist yet. You need to know when and where to apply it. My motto was always to learn new massage techniques only, if I have successfully mastered the one I have learned before.

I'm actually only use very few techniques in my practice, but I know how I can use them. I am even sure that if you would really understand what a person needs by looking , hearing and feeling your common sense will tell you what to do.

But unfortunately most of us are not sensitive enough and we are not in a perfect world with perfect senses, so massage techniques help us to increase our sensitivity. But never overestimate massage techniques. Per se they do little.

My chinese massage teacher always used to say: "If you know where to treat, you can use your thumb, fingers, hand, elbow. You can even use your hand, a cane, a ball pen. And if you don't know, the best massage technique will not help you."

That's why it should be very encouring for beginners. Massage is 90% listening, and 10% technique. So everybody who is serious will be successful.
