Hawaiian Massage Video - Lomi Lomi Massage Video
Comfort is one of the most essential aspects of the effectiveness of a massage. Sometimes a therapist can do this with his personality, body language or in this case with smooth transitions from one body part to the next.
Some Hawaiian Massage actually extends these stroke from head to toe in one continuous flow. It's exceptionally relaxing and if somebody is good at it, you are in for a big treat.

Tuina Massage Video - Chinese Reflexology
It looks a lot different than Classic Western Reflexology foot massage. The main reason because he uses some kind of cream, which is interesting for an energetic massage technique, because it makes the energy to crossover between meridians, which is usually avoided.
The use of cream makes it possible to utilize friction techniques, that you are in general not using on dry skin..
The most important thing that he says in his video (and I have pointed this out on all articles about foot reflexology) is that just because you have a finding in the foot, it doesn't necessarily mean that the corresponding area in the body is affected.
So don't use foot reflexology as a means to diagnose, if you are don't have a lot of experience in chinese Tuina reflexology. The diagnosis of the foot is much more complex than that.

Bowen Therapy Video - Massage Therapy Video
Bowen Therapy is a non-invasive therapeutic bodywork system which employs cross-fiber muscle movements throughout the body. Clients lie on a treatment table and remain clothed as these "moves" are carried out over a period of about 45-60 minutes.
Short waiting periods are incorporated into the session, allowing the brain time to assimilate, correlate and create a positive response, which is sent back to the area being treated.
When these "moves" are placed in a precise manner across muscle and connective tissue, they create a deep sense of relaxation, relieving the pain and stress from a multitude of physical ailments. This response of the autonomic nervous system has been verified as extremely effective in a high percentage of clients in clinical testing.
The benefits of Bowen Therapy are:
- Balances the Autonomic Nervous System
- Stimulates Lymphatic Circulation
- Balances the Energetic System
- Releases Pain
- Relaxes Muscles

Barefoot Massage Video - Back routine in seated position
When I had major problems with my wrists due to an accident, I wasn't able to do massage using my hands.
That's when I came across barefoot massage. It is used in connection with Shiatsu, Thai massage and other Asian massage styles.
First it was hard, because I didn't have quite the coordination down and it was also hard to read as much about tension patterns as I could with my hands, but I really enjoyed the flow and the intensity that you could use without being pokey.
I gradually mastered many of the moves that are shown in this video and I think barefoot massage is a very great technique for those of you who want to massage but are restricted because of hand, wrist injuries. It is also great for people who do not have the stamina in their arms and shoulders to work on a large framed body.
This barefoot massage video has excellent quality, and gives step-by-step instruction on how to do the back routine in seated position.

Russian Massage Video
This Russian massage therapy seems to be heavily influenced by different massage techniques of this world.
There are internal as well as external techniques, it resembles partly Shiatsu, Thai (although there is a bunch of stretches I have never seen), Tuina (especially the longitudinal stretches with two people), Ayurvedic massage (especially in the beginning using a 4 handed technique), barefoot massage, etc.
I think there is some nice ideas in this video and is probably not what you expect when you hear Russian massage.

Eye Massage Video
Well I'm not sure how much this massage helps, because it didn't make my eyes feel that great. I spend a lot of time in front of the computer and so I do not really appreciate lots of moving things on the computer.
I have noticed in my practice that a lot of my clients who are working on computers complain about problems with their eyes. We have seen at least some gadgets pop up which are supposed to massage the eyes.
Eye massage is great as a relaxing technique, but oftentimes a piece of cucumber or a fresh rose do the same.
Most of us strain when we sit in front of the computer or TV a lot, because we do not take enough breaks in between our sessions. Just a few minutes is usually enough.
Yoga exercises to strengthen the eye muscles can also be a valuable addition.
If you consistently experience headaches and pain in your temples, then you should probably consider seeing an eye doctor. Prescription glasses or contact lenses can sometimes really make a difference. I just had a friend buy one of those $ 8 Zenni Optical Rx Eyeglasses. And he is very happy with them.

Gun Fa (Rolling Method) - Tuina Massage Video
Gun Fa is a great massage technique and utilizes the back of the hand. Sometimes a massage therapist might also use the back of the fingers or the belly of the thumb, but in case of this Tuina massage video I will only show you the main technique with the back of the hands.
The pacing is usually around 140-160 rolls per minute, the movement should be smooth, constant, even and the hand should not rub or slip.
Try it out yourself and see that it is actually no that easy and can be very tiring in the beginning, but after you get used to it, it is a great tool especially for the large areas in the body.
Gun Fa should not be applied on the front of the neck, the face, the head and in the belly and chest area.
That means usually you use Gun Fa along the back, hips, legs and arms.
The benefits of Gun Fa are relaxation, increased flow of Chi and therefore also increase circulation of blood.

Chinese Massage Video 1 - Tuina Massage Video 1
Tuina means literally "push" (Tui) and "pinch" (Na). It is part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and is many times used in combination acupuncture, moxibustion, herbal medicine, cupping etc.
There is a vast amount of research in China about the benefits of Tuina and even though is was historically mainly used on infants and seniors, it offers treatment options for a variety of clinical situations: orthopedics, traumatology, cosmetology, rehabilitation, sports medicine, etc.
I will show you three techniques that will show the difference of Chinese Massage to massages of other cultures, but at the same time will also show similarly used techniques (just in a different context maybe)
Chinese Massage (in this case Tuina) is based on the concept of energy (Chi). Chi is the life force that flows through distinctive channels within the body (meridians). Scientific studies cannot directly proof Chi within the body, but has to accept the concept of Chi, because it can proof the results and changes within the body that stem from manipulation of the Chi (in form of Chinese Massage, Acupuncture and body exercises like Tai Chi or Qi Gong)
Chinese Massage Video - Tuina Massage Video 1:
I will start the series with a general intoduction by Errol Dexter Lynch about Tuina Massage.
He shows in this video the very basic techniques used in this chinese massage.
Take note of the flow, the ease of the movements, the importance of posture and the energizing effect of the movements.
It includes Gun Fa (which I will show in a later post), vibration, slapping and elbow techniques.

Massage and Alcoholism
In this post I wanted to talk a little bit about the great impact that massage and other manual therapies have in the treatment of addiction.
I just recently came across an Alcohol Rehab program in California, that explains very straight forward why massage is so important in connection with Alcohol Rehabilitation:
Massage helps to alleviate stress that comes with addiction and with recovery alike. Addiction often leaves the body damaged and it's strength to rejuvenate. Massage will help to encourage the body to regain vitality again.
Massage has such an enormous impact on the detox process in the Alcohol Rehab, because it increases the circulation within the body and helps to eliminate toxins.
The liver which is greatly impacted by addiction is usually congested with toxins, which leads to all kinds of other health conditions, like hypertension etc..
Of course massage is just one aspect of Rehabilitation, and residential facilities who also offer exercise programs, proper diet, behavioral modification therapy and other program aspects will lead to more success, because they try to simultaneously approach the problem from many different angles.

Rosenmethod - a mostly unknown Massage Therapy
The Rosenmethod was created by Marion Rosen
Marion Rosen, who was originally born in Germany, came to America in the 1940's and is supposedly still practicing in Berkeley, California.
Even though the Rosenmethod focuses on listening and watching, this massage style with very soft touch has been shown to be very successful.
It does remind me remotely on the principles of Cranio Sacral Therapy.
See what Marion Rosen herself had to say about the principles of her bodywork in a little interview:
JR: What is the theoretical basis of your work?
MR. The theoretical basis is that the body doesn't lie. The body retains thoughts, experiences what really happened. It doesn't change it in any way. So some times when we are asked a question and we answer with our thinking we can influence our thinking, but the body ? the breath especially, cannot be influenced. Something very spontaneous occurs which we can feel with our hands. We can gain access to experiences and feelings that otherwise are not accessible.
JR: Describe how you see the body when you work on someone.
MR. When I look at a body I get the picture of how this body would look if it was showing itself in the best working order and then I look and see what has happened, how it has deviated from its perfection. I believe there have been some experiences that could not be handled at the time we experienced them, and so we put them in our unconscious with the help of muscles. The muscles suppress the feelings or the knowledge about what has happened to us, and, as a consequence, the muscles working on that experience appear different in the body.
JR: How does movement relate to the Rosen Method?
MR. Movement shows where a person is not free. For example a child usually moves very freely. But if a child grows up with experiences that are frightening or hurtful or if they have feelings that were suppressed, things that could not be said that want to be expressed, then all kinds of muscles will constantly hold and form a barrier to free movement. So when we see a person move we see where they allow themselves to move freely or where they don’t allow themselves to move.
JR: In this process, what does the client and the practitioner experience when these emotions surface?
MR. The practitioner feels the breath increase, feels or sees the colour in the face change and sees a movement – a rapid eye movement – sometimes hears a sound in people’s breathing. What the client feels is really the feeling – the authentic feelings – that they felt at the time when a trauma or difficulty happened. It is not something they think about but something they really feel.

Japanese Massage Videos
Instead I stumbled across this really nice 8 part shiatsu massage therapy video from the Shinzui Shiatsu Academy in Belgium, that I would like to present to you today.
Unfortunately there is no instruction or voice over on this style (maybe would be not so helpful anyway, as they speak french in Belgium), but the clear visuals give a great introduction to this Japanese style.

Foot massage video
This is great for people who are learning better by visuals. I know I can sometimes read sometimes in a book or see a chart or diagram, but it is much easier for me to grasp something if it is shown to me in person.
This foot massage is showing exactly that.
You know already that I'm not much of a fan of just experimenting with reflexology, but a basic knowledge about it can sometimes help with very obvious ailments, like headaches, toothaches, PMS or stomach problems.
These techniques should be seen as first aid medicine and should never replace proper health care by a professional.
I have never been much a fan of any kind of OTC pain killers and so I had to sometimes use reflexology to release the pain (for example with a toothache on the weekend etc.)
TIP: I personally keep my finger much closer to my hand when I do reflexology to protect the joints of my thumb. To stretch the thumb out sideways can lead to overstretching of the ligaments of the joint and chronic pain. So remember always to move in the direction of the joints of thumbs and fingers and not perpendicular to them.

Aromatherapy Massage Video
A lot of the videos are so chopped up and in 10 parts, that it is hard for me to actually watch through all of them.
But I found this really neat introduction Aromatherapy massage video that I wanted to show you. Actually it inspired me to write an article about it. (Link below)
I'm not super happy with the way the massage techniques are shown in the video, but massage is very subjective, so everybody has their own style.
Fact is though that the lady did a very nice 30 minute video clip series (in 3 parts) that is very clear and basic, so it is very useful to the novice but also for the pro as well.
Aromatherapy massage definitely plays an important role in many massage traditions and I have personally experienced it with my clients that fragrance can be an exceptional stimulant and relaxant.
Just make sure your client is not sensitive to fragrances and use the oil (which are very potent) only in small quantities. Less is often more.
I have noticed that when you use a certain essential oil on people for a while, that that oil alone can sometimes recreate some of the effects of massage, even without doing a massage. I wrote about this extensively in my new eBook: (which is also a great introduction for any person interested in massage)
Now here is the video introduction for Aromatherapy massage:
