Rolfing Video - Structural Integration

This Rolfing video is an introduction to the therapy.

Rolfing or Structural Integration "is a hands-on manipulation developed by Ida P. Rolf 50 years ago. It works on the connective tissue to release, realign and balance the whole body. Rolfing enhances your posture and freedom of movement. It can resolve pain and discomfort from many different causes, including back pain, repetitive motion injury, trauma, and aging. Rolfing is also an excellent foundation for and complement to yoga, pilates and other personal wellness practices. "

I have learned this therapy form more than 5 years ago. It's one of my 3 most favorite forms of body work. Even when I use other massage styles, I base many of my treatment decisions at least partly on Rolfing techniques.

Rolfing forces you to see the body as a whole and how each and every aspect of the body affects all the others. I hope I will find more good Rolfing videos in the future.

Here is the 9 minute introductory Rolfing video. Enjoy:

There is also quite extensive research done on the effects of Rolfing.

Aquatic Body Work Video - Hydrotherapy Video

This Aquatic Body Work Video gives a great insight in the analysis of a person's muscle patterns in the water.

You first have to get used to the fact that you are not seeing the movement of the joints as it relates to gravity as we usually do in Massage therapy.

But the floating effect of the body makes it so, that small stabilizer muscles in the joints relax and therefore only muscles with problems keep their tension.

So by moving the joint through all different angles you can very precisely determine, which muscle or muscle group is at fault and that makes this analysis very efficient.

It takes some time to feel the difference, but the Aquatic Body Work is very rewarding for both the therapist and the client.

Massage Techniques Video

The Massage Techniques video of today shows very neat techniques that are easy to learn and to apply.

Most of the techniques shown seem familiar to me, similar to Swedish Massage therapy.

Especially the techniques where the massage therapist anchors the tissue with one hand and stretches it away with the other hand. This is a very effective release technique not just of muscle tension, but also of restrictions in the fascial structures.

The other technique that I think is very unique in this video is the shoulder relaxation in the prone position (face down). By putting your leg under the persons arm, you create some stretch on the front of the shoulder.

You need to do this slowly though, because a lot of people are very restricted in the shoulder.

I'm not so fond of the pendulum movement of the arm, the way it is shown here. You are basically moving the arm through internal and external rotation. The problem is that on the internal rotation the shoulder gets rotated to far in the video and creates a jolt into the joint. Try to avoid this by not moving the shoulder that far.

Anatomy Videos: Connective Tissue

I will from now on also include informational videos about important aspects of theory of massage, because I think it is a great reminder for those who have learned that stuff a long time ago and need to refresh their memories, for those who study massage and for those who are just interested in how the body is built and works.

I start with two little videos about connective tissue:

1. The Anatomy of Connective Tissue

2. Three kinds of Cartilage

Connective Tissue Massage Video

The Connective Tissue Massage Video is very interesting.

Connective Tissue Therapy (CTT), Connective Tissue Massage (CTM), Deep Connective Tissue Massage, Bindegewebsmassage, was developed by Elizabeth Dicke in Germany in 1929. If you want to acquire a license for massage therapy in Europe, CTT is usually on your curriculum.

Connective Tissue massage is well known throughout the world but the term is less known in the US, where connective tissue techniques are usually connected to Ida Rolf's Rolfing techniques.

Probably the most notable publication was "Massage of Reflex Zones in the Connective Tissue in the Presence of Rheumatic and Internal Diseases", which Dicke wrote together Kohlrausch, Leube and Mac Kenzie in 1942. Some might know J. MacKenzie who researched changes in muscle tones in relationships to organs.

Here is the video, unfortunately I couldn't embed it on the blog (Opens in a new window)

I learned this technique almost 20 years ago. It is very effective in post op rehab, rehab after trauma and chronic postural trauma. The technique shown with straight fingers is common, but I don't like the chronic pressure on the finger joints so I usually use a technique more common in Rolfing with bent fingers.

Hydrotherapy massage video - Thalasso Therapy

The Hydrotherapy massage video below is interesting for two reasons.

  1. Massage done in a bathtub can be very soothing. I have found that you can use the floating especially for people who cannot lie on their backs for a long time. I have been using bathtub massage for athletes, for minor back pains and sprains.

The main thing to be aware of giving a hydromassage is your own posture. Even in the video it looks like that the tub might be a little bit to low.

Another option to work on that is to go to a swimming pool or spa. A Jacuzzi is really good. I have given many massage treatments in spa pool, especially with seniors and kids. With seniors because it is sometimes more comfortable for them in the water, and for kids because massage can be fun in the water.

I will show more videos about pool massage, hydro massage or so-called Watsu in the future.

  2. Seaweed is a major part of Thalasso Hydrotherapy and is used to cleanse and detox the skin and body. The combination of Hydrojets and manual massage leads to increased circulation and of course relaxation.

Pregnancy Massage Video DVD

Good Pregnancy Massage video clips are rare on the internet.

Pregnancy oftentimes puts an enormous postural stress on the body, the body tries to compensate, but chronic overload leads to tightness and tension. This is where massage can help a great deal.

The main difference to normal massage lies in the anatomical changes of a pregnant woman. That means there needs to be a lot of care in terms of positioning, so that the well-being of the mom and the baby is not compromised.

Here is a Pregnancy massage video series (part 1 and 2) I just recently checked out. Meade Steadman, demonstrates step-by-step massage techniques for all the trimesters.

The Pregnancy massage techniques can be ordered by calling 1-800-414-2434 or visiting www.VideoShelf.com.

Here is a clip from part 1 of the pregnancy massage video series:

Chair Massage Video

I'm working on a chair massage video myself right now.

Chair Massage is great, especially for people with Reflux and who don't like the sinus pressure they experience when lying on a massage table.

Pro massage chairs are really helpful when you work on the neck and upper shoulders, but most techniques can be applied on a normal office chair too.

I actually like to use an exercise ball, when a massage chair is not available. Just put the exercise ball on the thighs of the client and roll the chair against the office desk until the person can comfortable put their upper body and head on the ball.

Some quick facts about chair massages in companies in this first chair massage video:

I had a friend who was giving quick 10-15 minutes shoulder neck massage is big corporations and made a good living with it. You basically just need to hook up with a couple of big corporations and you don't have to worry about not having enough to do.

I also found this great chair massage video that shows the usage of what they call the thermal palm. I have used heated herbal bags myself and I think this is really a great way to calm a person after a stressed day.

Enjoy this 15 minute Chair massage video:

Just be careful with people who have a tendency for migraine headaches, the heat will sometimes trigger it.

I would not offer heated treatments during the day, because it makes people sleepy sometimes. Not good if they still have to work!

Chair massage can be also done on any type of chair as long as the recipient and the massage are in comfortable positions.
