Contraindications for Massage

Before you dive into practicing massage I want you to read the contraindications for massage. A contraindication to massage means that if the person you are massaging has any of these conditions that you should NOT administer massage to them. It also means that if any of these contraindications apply to YOU that you should NOT receive and possibly also not give massage at this time.

Most massage schools divide contraindications for massage into three different groups:

  1. Total Contraindications
  2. Local Contraindications
  3. Medical Contraindications

The list provided here should NOT be considered complete. Before doing massage, you should first consult with a licensed physician in regards to any condition and as to your health in general.

1. Total Contraindications

People with these conditions should not give massage or receive a massage - without exception.
  • Fever
  • Contagious or infectious diseases, including any cold or flu no matter how mild it may seem
  • Under the influence of drugs or alcohol- including prescription pain medication
  • Recent operations or acute injuries
  • Neuritis
  • Skin diseases

2. Local Contraindications

These conditions allow massage in areas that are not affected. If in doubt, consult with a licensed physician about whether there is any problem with doing massage

  • Varicose veins
  • Undiagnosed lumps or bumps
  • Pregnancy
  • Bruising
  • Cuts
  • Abrasions
  • Sunburn
  • Undiagnosed pain
  • Inflammation, including arthritis

3. Medical Contraindications

Therapists usually ask for written permission from a licensed physician for people with these conditions before they give them treatment. I would definitely consult with a licensed physician to make sure that massage would be okay.

  • Cardio-vascular conditions (thrombosis, phlebitis, hypertension, heart conditions)
  • Any condition already being treated by a medical practitioner
  • Edema
  • Psoriasis or eczema
  • High blood pressure
  • Osteoporosis
  • Cancer
  • Nervous or psychotic conditions
  • Heart problems, angina, those with pacemakers
  • Epilepsy
  • Diabetes
  • Bell's palsy, trapped or pinched nerves
  • Gynecological infections
