Sports Massage Video
Sports massage therapy is an integral part of athletics. It's not like in the old boxing movies, where a guy is just hacking and punching the muscles of the boxer in the corner between rounds. It is an art form and a science. Massage can be a very crucial aspect to an athletes performance and competition.
Sports Massage utilizes mainly techniques from Swedish massage (like friction, effleurage and petrissage) and uses them according to the needs of the particular athlete and specific concerns of a particular sport. In other words you will massage a 12 year old 100lbs rhythmic gymnastics girl different than a 250lbs kickboxer.
Similar to Swedish massage all strokes in Sports massage are usually done towards the heart to help venous and lymphatic flow, which is especially important in times of recovery. Many sports massage therapist also use massage techniques from other styles like reflexology, shiatsu and thai massage.
That means sports therapy massage will look different on-season than off-season, before, during and after a competition.
Sports massage before (pre-event) and during a competition always needs to be focused on enhancing the athletic performance during competition, while massage after a competition (post-event) has to be focused on faster recovery, treating minor injuries and discomforts.
Therefore massage before and during competition will usually be short and to the point.
What happens if sports therapy massage before a competition is too deep and long? Deep massage before a competition will weaken the muscle, will make the athlete feel too comfortable and sleepy, decrease the competitiveness of the athlete and will possibly lead to injury. The same is true during a competition. Massage interventions have to be short and geared towards.

Footnote: Massage Oils that dissolve in water
are a great invention. They come either scented or unscented. There is Vanilla-Coconut, Lavender, Peppermint. I prefer unscented, so I bought that.
It feels a little bit different than traditional massage oil, but not much. If you get it on your sheets, pillows and clothes, just put them in the wash. Anyway it works great. Click here
