Swedish massage techniques probably what most people think of when they think about massage in general. Swedish massage is a very broad term for different techniques, ranging from a simple touch, effleurage (stroking), petrissage (kneading), friction, percussion, vibration and passive joint movements.
There are many smaller techniques within these above mentioned techniques that will be used according to circumstances, body of the client and preference of the massage therapist.
Swedish massage techniques are usually performed with oil, lotion or powder, although many of the techniques can also preformed dry or through clothes.
Swedish massage can be seen as the foundation of western massage and it is therefore a very good style to learn as a beginner. I started my massage education with Swedish massage techniques and it helped me to develop the sensitivity in my fingers, to realize how important the flow of movements is and how to work with oil, lotion, powder.
Many massage schools teach that Swedish massage techniques have to be performed in a certain order, but I would say this is more a recommendation rather than a rule. A more experienced massage therapist will always follow his instincts and with the recommendations in the back of the mind, will always have the satisfaction of the clients in mind and so sometimes choose against the recommendation.

Footnote: Massage Oils that dissolve in water
are a great invention. They come either scented or unscented. There is Vanilla-Coconut, Lavender, Peppermint. I prefer unscented, so I bought that.
It feels a little bit different than traditional massage oil, but not much. If you get it on your sheets, pillows and clothes, just put them in the wash. Anyway it works great. Click here
