Trigger Point Massage Video

Trigger point massage is a good technique to bring immediate relief to conditions like frozen shoulder, stiff neck, tennis elbow and headaches.

Trigger points form whenever a muscle or joint is stressed beyond its capacity to recover. They are usually felt as a taut band in the muscle tissue and are believed to be the result of an accumulation of toxic waste around a nerve ending.

The trigger point will lead to increased muscle tension. They can be active (and sore!) and latent. Active trigger points will create pain and discomfort.

Trigger Point massage therapists have found that certain muscle & joint conditions always have corresponding trigger point patterns, which means that if you find somebody with a certain condition, you will most likely also find the corresponding trigger points, which when properly treated may give some or full relief for pain and discomfort.

Trigger Point therapist have collected patterns for a long time and put them together on wall charts. In that way the trigger point massage therapist does not have to memorize all patterns for all conditions.

So how is the trigger point treatment done. Usually the therapist will apply 10 seconds of static pressure and then 10 seconds of pumping motions on the trigger point. Similar to the Chinese acupressure (and in most of the cases trigger points and acupoints are found in the same location) the first 10 seconds will move chi away from the point, which will let the acute pain and discomfort subside, while the second 10 seconds will draw chi to the point to help recovery (increased blood flow, oxygenation of the area and elimination of waste and toxic material from the point).
